Welcome to Barker College Senior Library
The vision of the Barker College Library is to be a safe learning environment that provides resources and services to support the educational and spiritual journey of our students as they work to realise the goals of the Australian Curriculum. We believe that as we do this, we are preparing students to live and work confidently and successfully in the twenty-first century while supporting the overarching vision of Barker College which is to be "A leader in Christian education that is characterised by a global vision that inspires hope."
Our Teaching & Learning Goals
The 2016 Teaching & Learning Goals of the Barker Library are:
- To promote and help staff and students develop traditional and digital literacy skills and literacies.
- To promote and provide support and training to staff and students in researching and writing skills and literacies.
- To be a safe and dynamic learning environment that provides resources and services which supports and contributes to the overarching vision of Barker College which is to become "...a leader in Christian education characterised by a global vision that inspires hope."
The Barker Library is a special place integral to teaching and learning at Barker.
Located in the heart of the campus, it is a welcoming and focused learning space designed to enrich the lives of all its users. Spanning 3 floors it has been purpose-built to embrace various learning styles through provision of large class areas, technology rooms, individual study facilties, and group discussion rooms.
Studies have shown that a school with a well-resourced library provides opportunities for students to excel and connect with their learning on many levels. Further, studies show the benefits to be gained in terms of student achievement through the provision of qualified teacher librarians. At Barker eight teacher librarians work closely with subject departments to ensure information literacy skills are embedded into the curriculum.
Our staff also celebrate reading for pleasure and have developed a comprehensive collection of fiction and non-fiction to meet the varied needs of students and staff. As well, we offer all students from Years 7–10 the opportunity to regularly pursue their reading interests through our very successful Boys & Books program and the Year 10 Independent Reading Challenge.
